Transcript: The Value of Checking In

00:00:24 - Maelisa Hall
Hey, welcome back to season one of the My Biz Bestie podcast. I'm Melissa Hall.

00:00:28 - Amber Hawley
And I'm Amber Hawley.

00:00:30 - Maelisa Hall
And today we are talking about the value of checking in with one another.
So Amber, it has actually been like a whole two or three days since we talked and because, you know, there was a weekend. It feels like it was longer.

00:00:45 - Amber Hawley
I know it was Friday technically, but it's crazy.

00:00:50 - Maelisa Hall
So why don't you let me know what's been going on with you?

00:00:56 - Amber Hawley
Sure. And, uh, We must not have talked long on Friday because it does feel longer than that. And I know you had – that's right, you had your big event. So, yeah, it has felt like longer.

00:01:07 - Maelisa Hall
I know.

00:01:09 - Amber Hawley
Yeah, so it was a busy weekend for me, mostly family, kids, stuff, which was good. But I feel like right now I'm just really trying to be focused and get a lot done because the next month or so –. actually a little over a month, we are doing a lot of traveling, a lot of amazing events.
But of course, like anything, when you leave to go out of town to an event, you still have to do all that other work just in a shorter period of time and make sure you don't want to come back feeling behind. Right.

00:01:46 - Maelisa Hall
And we're going to be gone for quite a few days, a few times.

00:01:50 - Amber Hawley
Yeah. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. We, next week we have an event the week after that we're back for one week and that's my daughter's birthday. And then we go again for a week. So yeah, it's, it's going to be busy. And the next thing you know, it's Thanksgiving and then it's Christmas and there's new years.
So happy new years, everyone. So it just feels like that. But, um, yeah, so because I know there's so much on my plate and not in a bad way, it's all very manageable, but I just have to be really thoughtful and we are entering the cold and flu season and I do have three children under seven or seven and under.
So I'm all about my health right now. So I'm trying to make sure that I'm boosting my immune system and really working on my sleep. I have insomnia. So that I've had off and on for most of my life.

Like for real people.

00:02:44 - Maelisa Hall
I get messages at like 3 a.m., 12 a.m., 5am all different times of the day.

00:02:49 - Amber Hawley
Yes. I'm it's, it's a legit issue, but I'm working on it. And the irony is I actually help people with that in my practice, but I think because I've done everything. And so, you know, it's, it's just, it is what it is, but it's getting, it's actually getting a lot better.
So this is good. But I really have to be, because of that, I have to be really diligent about taking care and doing the right things so that I do sleep. And then, of course, you know, when you don't sleep, your immune system goes to crap. So taking care of my immune system.
So, yeah, this morning or yesterday, actually, last night, my husband and I were watching Outlander because that's our favorite show in the world. And we were talking afterwards. And then I, you know, was kind of recapping the next month for him, you know, because I tell him over and over just so that he'll eventually remember.

And then... I was telling him, like, I need to be doing my green juice in the morning. That's going to make a world of difference for me. And he's like, well, what can we do to make that, you know, easier work? And I said, well, I think I just need to keep the juicer on the counter.
And I hate having stuff on the counter. I like everything to be put away and neat and clean. But I said, you know, until it's a habit, I just feel like I need to do that. And so he's like, well, what needs to be done? And he's asking all these questions and...
So I'm like, wow, good for him. Oh yeah. He was, he was on it last night. I'm telling you. And, and I, I was like, no, you can't just make the juice. Cause my fear was he would make the juice and then, you know, like really early and he's letting me sleep in.
But I went to a health lady and you have to drink it within 15 minutes of making it to make it medicinal.

So it was like a big deal. So he, I get up this morning, he had prepped, like washed all the, the vegetables and set it out. And the juicer was all set out, like everything to make sure. that the first thing I did was have my green juice this morning.
So that was amazing. I love that. Yeah. So I took my daughter to gymnastics and had my green juice. So I feel like I started the day right. So I feel pretty good about that. So I think that's pretty much been my focus other than, you know, I feel like work is always, it's always like trying to keep up with work.
I just hired another therapist. So there's been a lot of like awesome, fun things going on. and busy, but not in like a busy work kind of way, but just full. And so now I'm just making sure I need to stay well. Like all this travel, I am not going to get sick and miss out on all the fun because there's going to be some amazingness coming up.

Seriously. And we can get FOMO. Yes. I would be so sad. Well, and both Melissa and I won a spot. We're going to FinCon in a couple of weeks and we both won a spot to do their FinCon Ignite, or is that what it's called? The Ignite speeches. And so they're little five-minute speeches, but we just found out last week that we both won a spot for our talk.
So now we actually have to put the talk together. So there's just... And that's Friday night. I do not want to be sick and have to give that talk.

00:05:55 - Maelisa Hall
Yeah, I'm really excited about that. And also... that's a lot of pressure. And it's easy to get really stressed out when there's all these different things going on. So I love that you are focusing on your health. And I feel like you're a lot better about that than me right now.
So it is helpful to hear you say all this stuff.

00:06:14 - Amber Hawley
Well, I think I think you're healthier, you sleep. Well, nevermind. We both have sleep. Yes. Yeah.

00:06:25 - Maelisa Hall
So more sporadic.

00:06:27 - Amber Hawley
Yes, yes. Not as consistent, but still some sleep stuff there. But I am dying to hear more about the big event from last week that you attended. I have some FOMO.

00:06:41 - Maelisa Hall
Yes. I know. I know. So Denise Duffield Thomas, who we talked about, I think, in our first episode, because she wrote the book that originally brought us together, Get Rich, Lucky Bitch. Yes. She was she's Australian and she was actually here in the U.
S. this month. She's doing some events to actually meet people since she's not usually here. So she was in L.A. I was like, this is perfect. You know, she's here. I have no excuse. So I'm going. And I was really excited, even though honestly, I had no idea.
Like she didn't say what the schedule was like. It was just we were going to be there from 10 to 4. And that was it. There was nothing like, oh, here's what we're going to cover. Or like, is there going to be hot seats? Is there going to be information?

Are we going to be doing group stuff? I had no clue. I didn't even know how many people were going to be there.

00:07:38 - Amber Hawley
Was this part of taking her course or is this separate?

00:07:43 - Maelisa Hall
This is separate. Now, I think almost everybody there has taken her money boot camp, but anybody could sign up.

00:07:52 - Amber Hawley
Okay. Yeah.

00:07:53 - Maelisa Hall
Yeah. And she did call it a VIP day. So this was she's doing some little get togethers in various cities. And then in New York and LA, she did a full VIP day. So so I signed up for that because I wanted to soak up her wisdom and her energy all day long.

00:08:14 - Amber Hawley
Yes.

00:08:16 - Maelisa Hall
So it was really cool because I obviously let all of you know in our private Facebook group that I was going and everybody was excited. And then one other person in our group, Lorena, she had said, you have to tell us how it goes and do a Facebook Live and do a video.
And so that was really cool because it got me thinking right from the beginning. And then especially as I was leaving the event, like, oh, okay. how am I going to summarize this? What did I learn? Uh, what was really impactful for me? And I was already thinking about how do I tell everybody about what I'm doing?

00:08:55 - Amber Hawley
Yeah. And just to clarify the, you mean our mavens group, not our biz bestie page.

00:09:01 - Maelisa Hall
Yes. Yes, you are correct. So this is like in our group of nine where we do our annual retreat business retreat deal. Um, So it was really cool to have that guidance, I guess, is what it is, to think about that ahead of time. So, I mean, I obviously was impactful and I would have been thinking about it regardless, but to think about how to summarize it.
And it actually brings me back to when I was in corporate learning about training and one of the biggest factors in making use of a training is not the actual attendance of the training, but the preparation, right? And so like if you have employees or work with people or anything like that, the supervisor talking to the employee about a training beforehand is one of the key indicators in how helpful a training will be to somebody after the fact.

00:09:59 - Amber Hawley
Oh, wow. That's really, yeah, that's great to know. I'm sure that will help a lot of people, especially as they, you know, have employees that they're probably sending to trainings here and there.

00:10:11 - Maelisa Hall
That's a great little nugget.

00:10:12 - Amber Hawley
Yeah.

00:10:13 - Maelisa Hall
Yeah, and it's a cool thing to think about for ourselves as entrepreneurs. So how do you build that in for yourself? And having people like one another where we can think about that ahead of time helps. I like it. So it was amazing. And we kind of just chatted a lot.
She had some direction. She had us all do introductions and kind of gave feedback throughout that time. And then she passed out this worksheet online. that was evaluating different stages of your business. And we pretty much spent the whole day going through that worksheet and people asking questions about, okay, I'm at stage one.
And she would say, what's your biggest block here? What do you notice here that's keeping you from going to stage two? And then we'd move on. And some people are doing different things. It's not like you do everything in stage one and then move to stage two.

So some things you might mix up a little bit, but it was really cool to see that flow and then to get feedback and see where everybody was in their business and the different blocks that hold us back at all of those different points. Very cool. So I will say, I think one of the biggest things, so there's like two big takeaways for me from the whole event.
And the first one was actually in the beginning, she was talking about how at her house they have banned the word busy. I think it was busy and tired, but busy was the one that really hit me. And so they can never say, oh, I'm too busy or I'm so busy today or anything like that.
And they replace it with the word blessed. So she said it does get kind of funny because they'll say like ironic little things.

She'll feel really overwhelmed and she'll say, oh, I'm just so blessed today. But she said it's still... It still works, even though she's being sarcastic, because it's reminding her that she's reframing it, right?

00:12:18 - Amber Hawley
Which is good to know, because in all honesty, I'm trying to work on that as well. And if I wasn't allowed to be sarcastic, I just don't know that that would really work.

00:12:29 - Maelisa Hall
Right? Yeah, because you're not always feeling it, you know, but you're like, okay, I'm committed to this, but I'm not feeling it right now.

00:12:35 - Amber Hawley
I would be like, I'm so F-bomb blessed. That was me trying to protect our explicit rating right there.

00:12:47 - Maelisa Hall
Yeah, we'll see if we just have to let that go. But yeah, so I thought that was really cool. And what was really interesting about it is that I had been thinking about it a few days beforehand, thinking about how often... especially maybe when I'm talking to you, I just think of all the things that I have to do because we're often talking about all this business stuff and complaining about how busy I am or feeling busy.
And especially I think being frustrated around feeling busy, but on days maybe when I feel like I also didn't get accomplished what I wanted or needed to get accomplished. So it was helpful for me to see, okay, I think I'm on the right track with that.
That's something that I need to be working on. And so I'm going to try to ban busy from my language as well.

00:13:38 - Amber Hawley
Yeah. And you know, even in the intro, I'm aware that I did mention that it's a busy month, right? But I did, that's why I did say, you know, not in a bad way, but it's full. Like I'm trying to not use that word as well, but I, you know, it's, it's one of those things like you're trying not to, it is important to the language you use about how you're going to overwhelm yourself or the mindset you're going to be in or how you're approaching things.
Um, not that we want to add more taboo words or anything, but I think the intent when we use the word busy is often in a more negative vibe, right? So we're not vibing at the, in the place that that's going to give us the energy to get that stuff done.

00:14:23 - Maelisa Hall
Yeah, yeah. And it was interesting because I had listened to a podcast episode with Denise. She was on someone else's podcast. And she was talking about how if you're busy, then you're probably just spending too much time doing things that don't align with you or things that you shouldn't be doing if you're feeling busy.
And that really hit me too because I was like, yeah, if I were... If I had a full day of things I really enjoyed, would I sit there talking to someone about how busy I am? Probably not.

00:15:00 - Amber Hawley
Hmm. Yeah, I don't know. That one's a tough one for me because I also think about I can spend a full day doing that and enjoying what I'm doing. Or even when I see clients, which I love doing, and they're full days of seeing clients. The problem is there's all these other things that you actually have to do.
And I feel like I never get to those. And so the things that you're really supposed to do. I mean, I do the things like, you know, feed your children. Yeah. You know, do the necessities, the absolute necessities. But there's so many other things that are like actually important, like billing or responding to people's emails.
But maybe what it is, is I would be better served if I could have help in that. Having somebody else as an assistant, you know, to, to do some of that stuff so that I wasn't feeling that way.

Cause it, that's, I hate that feeling of always feeling behind. So I agree with you completely. I just, I think the struggle for me is figuring out how to, how do I shift that?

00:16:07 - Maelisa Hall
Yeah. Well, and I think that was kind of the, the challenge that I took from it too was exactly that. That means things I'm doing that make me feel busy are usually things that I'm not as good at, or I fall behind on, um, You know, they're not my strengths.
I know they're not my strengths. And so they're things that if I could hire somebody to do them or when I hire somebody to do them, I feel so much better. Yeah.

00:16:33 - Amber Hawley
Yeah. I know. I need to... I think you brought it up last time. I definitely need to hire that assistant. I think I'd feel so much better.

00:16:41 - Maelisa Hall
You will.

00:16:42 - Amber Hawley
So much better.

00:16:43 - Maelisa Hall
Yeah. And even emails. Like I... this week have somebody starting who's going to be answering all of my emails and fielding questions that come in and just giving me a summary at the end of each week so that I don't have to go through. And then it also sort of, I want to be available to people, but I don't have the time to answer everybody's questions that I get through my online business and do the things I need to do.
Right, so it's not about like, now I'm no longer going to be available, but just restructuring how that happens, so that I'm using my time more wisely. And then maybe I do a Facebook Live and answer a bunch of questions all at once. And that's such a better strategy for me than constantly having to deal with emails.

00:17:34 - Amber Hawley
Yeah, that sounds brilliant, I love it.

00:17:37 - Maelisa Hall
Why? thank you? Random side note about that, too, um. I don't know if you've seen the comedian Chris D'Elia. He does a skit about girls and how they're, he's like, he's like, you talk to all, he's like, every one of you in here, every one of you girls, you have said this at least once today.
Oh my God, I've been running around all day, you know, and then he goes on about it. Have you literally been running around? I don't think so. Yeah, I remember. Yeah, I think he does say that. Like, I've literally been running around all day. And I thought it was funny because when I was watching that, I was like, oh, yeah, you do hear that.
And how often have I said something like that?

00:18:22 - Amber Hawley
Oh, amen. I have too. Yeah. If you're interested, you got to go to Netflix and check that out. It actually is a really funny one. That was the funny part.

00:18:32 - Maelisa Hall
But it highlights how maybe it's more about adjusting the way we think about things and working smarter, not harder, you know, literally.

00:18:46 - Amber Hawley
Sorry. We can go down a rabbit hole with that whole, what is it? A vocal fry thing. We just love to mock it. It's, it's fun stuff.

00:18:54 - Maelisa Hall
We enjoy it.

00:18:55 - Amber Hawley
It is. It's a good stress reliever to try it.

00:19:00 - Maelisa Hall
Um, you can't do it for too long though. Cause then you'll start actually talking like that accidentally.

00:19:04 - Amber Hawley
Yeah.

00:19:05 - Maelisa Hall
Then that's not right. No. Um, um, So I guess the other big takeaway I got from the event was exactly what we've been talking about with this podcast, which is so many people were saying, how do I find a community? Or how do I connect with other people, other business owners who are going through what I'm going through?
And I could see so many of the women there were desperate for someone to just bounce ideas off of. The community that we had and the space we had there, they didn't normally have. And I felt like because I have the community with our GSD group and then our friendship, that I had a lot of that on a regular basis.

So I was able to go to an event like that and be really open to whatever else might come in. Because I'm not starving for... basic information or confirmations of things or somebody to bounce ideas off of and help me figure things out.

00:20:14 - Amber Hawley
Right, right. Yeah, and I think that's an important factor. When those other needs are getting met, like anything, when they're being met, then you're open for the other stuff, right? And not that, obviously, one of our suggestions was go to events and meet people.
That is That is a valid way to meet people. So that can be a good connector because obviously you're choosing to be at a place that has a similar, you know, a particular theme. Yeah, it's a starting point. It's a good starting point. And at the same time, I think that highlights the value of why it is important to build that up for you because then, you know, that need is being met and there's other things that might happen for you, right?

00:20:59 - Maelisa Hall
Yeah. Yeah, exactly. And it was kind of encouraging to see that this is a conversation people are having. And we did, like a bunch of people exchanged emails and said, you know, we'll create this list and we'll follow up. So in that way, it was a great way to meet people.
And a lot of people are going to make some really good connections from that. So it's a good starting point if that's where you are and you're looking for that biz bestie or looking for that community. find people who you think are going to have, you know, either the same struggles as you or are in a like-minded space and trying to improve themselves in similar ways.

00:21:44 - Amber Hawley
Yeah. And I imagine, I guess now thinking about that particular event, um, I imagine what would be so beneficial in connecting with people is like if, so if everybody had to kind of self-identify like what stage of business they're at, and then they had to identify what their blocks were, that seems like that could be such a connecting point.
If you then reach out and connect with somebody who's also like stage one in their business and their block is like, charging for their services or whatever. I don't know what the blocks were. That was a common one. I kind of thought so because that's pretty typical, right?
In the first business. But who knows? It's DDT. She might have had some amazingness out there.

I don't know. But I could see where that event in particular would be so great in in connecting people because it's not, it's not like a surface level thing. It's very, that's a very deep thing that impacts your business greatly because once you really get comfortable with charging for your services, it really does allow you to quickly go through to, you know, level two and level three and so on and so forth.
You know, I know that each level has their own blocks, but that's a huge piece for people that once that's gone, it really does create the flow of, you know, the flow of abundance into their practice or their business. And I could see where that would be really helpful to have somebody that keeps you on track.
Because if you're, you know, as I call it, trying to clean up your language, and I'm not talking about swearing, but talking about the way you're speaking about your day and energy and the things you're wanting, then you're having somebody else who also went through that with you.

And so they know, so they can kind of call you out and help you reframe when you slip up.

00:23:44 - Maelisa Hall
Yeah. And it was really cool that because we were connecting around something like blocks and relationship around money, there were different people from different industries. So you might be in stage one of your business, but there are all these people doing different things.
And I think that's a really valuable thing to have as well, because you could go to a professional conference or something like that. And it's often a lot easier to find events where it's everyone else in your industry, but there's a lot of value from working with people or being around people who are in different industries.
And I think it really opens up a lot of ideas and new concepts and helps you to think outside the box.

00:24:27 - Amber Hawley
Yeah, no, I love that. And I think that's kind of... We did talk about this, I think, in the last episode, or maybe it was two episodes ago, about that's why we're purposefully going to these conferences that are outside our normal industry that we're in, because we want to expand and get new ideas and new ways of thinking and looking at things.
But yeah, definitely an event like this where... It's more about the money mindset than your actual industry. That's so valuable.

00:25:01 - Maelisa Hall
Yeah. Yeah. So it was a great event. I would highly recommend it or highly recommend checking out something similar where you can meet with people in a smaller group and it's set up that way for you to connect with other people around a certain area of growth.

00:25:21 - Amber Hawley
And I think that was one of the cool things when you so I watched your Facebook Live, and it was very engaging, because I tend to have a short attention span, especially late at night. And I watched the whole thing. So I was really proud of myself. But it was very engaging.
But you talked about you said there was a very small group, which I think made it more intimate as well, right?

00:25:47 - Maelisa Hall
Yeah, it was really easy to feel like you could raise your hand, ask a question, get feedback. And I think a lot of that has to do with whoever's running the event. So Denise was really good at engaging everybody and making sure that everyone had, you know, even before she moved on to another topic, she would say, you know, does anybody else have any questions?
And, and even by starting it out with introductions, and she said, you know, this is going to take a while. And it took like an hour to for everyone to introduce themselves. But she said, you know, I really want that to be the focus today for everyone to feel comfortable and so that you can ask the questions you want to ask and feel like you also know who's around you and who you're talking to.
Nice. Yeah, I like that.

00:26:35 - Amber Hawley
So also, you did get an awesome pick with your mentor, Denise. And we posted it on our Facebook page, the My Biz Bestie page. Yes. So you should definitely go and check it out. Yes. That's how accessible she was.

00:26:53 - Maelisa Hall
She got like an awesome... Yeah. Well, and I said, I was like, you're going to do pictures later, right?

00:26:57 - Amber Hawley
Like during the lunch break. Ask, believe, receive. If we're going to stick with this whole, the theme for today. Yeah.

00:27:08 - Maelisa Hall
And then I like... shamelessly posted it in her Facebook group as well and was like, I'm totally cheesing in this photo and so excited to have met you. You know, I love it.

00:27:20 - Amber Hawley
I love it. Well, you know, a little fangirl goes a long way, perhaps.

00:27:27 - Maelisa Hall
Yeah, it's done wonders for us, actually. I think fangirling is maybe we should have a whole episode on how to fangirl. Oh, my God.

00:27:34 - Amber Hawley
I have to restrain myself, though, because I really can get my fangirl on. I don't want to scare people. But yes, no, it sounded like such an amazing event. It makes me wish that I had been able to go. It's just we had so many things coming up that were amazing as well.
It felt like, I don't know, it felt like this last, like August through December, there are so many cool events happening. I just want to go to all of them, but that's not really feasible.

00:28:06 - Maelisa Hall
Yeah. Yeah. You have to pick and choose. And for me, it was right here. So I was like, okay, it's here.

00:28:11 - Amber Hawley
Absolutely. Yeah. If she had been in my hood, I definitely would have done it, which I don't understand. Like what? She doesn't like the Bay area. I'm just kidding. She actually will be in Dallas when we're there, but unfortunately I think we're going to be super busy with the conference.
So we'll have to see about that. Yeah. Um, Yeah. So, well, I, you know, I think we called this episode the value of checking in because, you know, like the little nugget that Melissa gave earlier about utilizing when you actually go to a training and how to best utilize it.
And there's something about, you know, she talked about the pre-work. But also when you do something, you learn something and then you teach it or even just explain it to somebody. That also reinforces that information for yourself and helps you integrate it in a different way.

Because when you teach something or explain something to someone, you're synthesizing it into your own words. So there's a lot of value in that as well. And I think that you doing that Facebook Live probably solidified some stuff for you. Because I know you shared additional things with us that maybe you might have forgotten about or lost.
Because we do get bombarded with so much information. And it's hard to remember everything, even though we think we will. But I'm sure that that was helpful.

00:29:34 - Maelisa Hall
Yeah, because it's impossible to... remember everything from a six-hour event or if you go to a conference or something. But if you can identify like one to three things, you know, that were really impactful and that are going to either influence things that you're doing or things that you're thinking, I think that's really how to make the best value out of it.

00:29:54 - Amber Hawley
Yeah. And there's... there's also, we talked about this before too, that those serendipitous moments where you start to share something and that may be something either somebody struggling with or something they're currently working on too. And again, it just keeps reinforcing that.
And that's how we create those new habits and patterns and, and make those positive changes so that we're more, you know, learned and, and satisfied and productive and, entrepreneurs. And my goal, I should say, I should speak for myself, is I want to be in a place where I feel on top of things and I feel the flow of my business and enjoy it more.
I don't want it to be like something I have to do.

And I don't really feel like I'm at that point except for when it comes to paperwork and emails. I do feel the flow most of the time. And not that everything's always going to be the fun stuff, right? But I think by learning these things and working on mindset and sharing with others and taking care of ourselves, we can create that lifestyle that supports our business and our life in a way that feels better to us.
Because I don't want to just feel like I'm in the grind. I don't, you know, you started talking about the idea of feeling really busy lately and that's really been sticking with me as well. And so that's something I don't want to feel busy. I don't mind having my schedule feel full, but I want it to feel like I have just enough and I have enough energy to do what I need to do.

00:31:35 - Maelisa Hall
Yeah. And you want to be excited about what you're doing rather than dreading a task or feeling like you just have to finish one task and do another and do another.

00:31:45 - Amber Hawley
Exactly. Yes. So that's... Yeah. So I think there's a lot of value in attending those kinds, you know, events that work on mindset, but also sharing and checking in with others, because like we said, that that's where you can get that support. So is there anything else from the event, any other takeaways or things that any other amazing nuggets?
Not that you haven't shared some good ones.

00:32:10 - Maelisa Hall
No, I came away with a crystal too. Not a literal nugget, but So it was fun because there was such variety there. And there was definitely some woo-woo stuff, which is cool to be able to talk business and woo at the same time. We embrace the woo. Yeah.
Yeah. We'll get into that more maybe at some point once you love and once you learn to love us more.

00:32:36 - Amber Hawley
Yeah. We woo on the down low because not everybody's open to the woo, right? Yeah. Awesome. Well, I think then that wraps us up for today. And so hopefully you got some takeaway about the value of checking in and how to utilize these events or, or trainings that you go to in a better capacity for yourself and for your employees.
