00:00:24 - Maelisa Hall
Welcome to season three of the My Biz Bestie podcast. I'm Melissa Hall.
00:00:28 - Amber Hawley
And I'm Amber Hawley.
00:00:30 - Maelisa Hall
And today we have another biz bestie interview for you guys. We have some lady bosses up in the podcast today. So we have Jacqueline Malone and Jessica Stansbury.
Welcome, ladies. Thank you. So Jacqueline and Jessica also have a podcast, All Up In Your Lady Business. Yes. which is a fun name, of course. So we dug that. And Amber and I met Jacqueline at Podcast Movement. And we're all four kind of in some of the same circles online.
So we've all been kind of communicating. And then we had so much fun with Jacqueline. We were like, hey, let's continue the convo and do a little interview and see how they all got together and all that good stuff.
00:01:19 - Amber Hawley
Plus, we wanted to say to someone, can we get all up in your lady business? Yeah.
00:01:24 - Maelisa Hall
Not have it be weird.
00:01:26 - Amber Hawley
And it wasn't at all creepy.
00:01:30 - Jessica Stansberry
Yeah, exactly. Like it can be fun sometimes, but only in the right context.
00:01:37 - Amber Hawley
Like college.
00:01:38 - Jessica Stansberry
Yeah. What I usually say when we're like, when we were somewhere and we introduce ourselves, I'll be like, it's not like a gynecology podcast.
00:01:46 - Jacqueline Malone
It's a female. I could see that.
00:01:50 - Jessica Stansberry
Yeah.
00:01:51 - Jacqueline Malone
Yeah. Yes. Well, there's like hand motions too. And she'll usually say like business and like a circle like around like our shoulders. And then she's like not like business. And then another circular motion. Down below the belt.
00:02:07 - Amber Hawley
Yes. I like it.
00:02:08 - Jacqueline Malone
It's a good way of putting that.
00:02:11 - Amber Hawley
I like it.
00:02:11 - Jacqueline Malone
Just to clarify in case there's any confusion. Because sometimes there's some confusion, you know?
00:02:15 - Amber Hawley
Well, now I'm sad that we're not recording video. We've decided... to postpone doing video to season four. So, you know, unfortunately you could have done the motions for us. But I think we can all pick, we can all picture it.
00:02:30 - Jacqueline Malone
Yeah. And we all look good too. Jessica and I never have been able to record the video because one of us always looks homeless.
00:02:37 - Amber Hawley
I was just thinking, I was like, I'm so glad we're not recording video today.
00:02:41 - Jessica Stansberry
Yeah. One of us always looks like we just crawled out of a dumpster somewhere and got banana peels stuck to our pants on the way out and forgot to brush our teeth for five days. That's what we look like.
00:02:53 - Maelisa Hall
Well, that's always just one of us.
00:02:55 - Jessica Stansberry
Yeah. And that's the wonderful thing about podcasting.
00:02:58 - Maelisa Hall
You don't have to worry about that. So if you start recording video, it's like this whole other world where you're like, crap, now I have to look decent when I'm doing this.
00:03:06 - Jacqueline Malone
So I don't know.
00:03:07 - Maelisa Hall
But you never know. Video may be coming to you very soon.
00:03:10 - Amber Hawley
We would do it.
00:03:11 - Maelisa Hall
We would do it for you, for our lovely listeners.
00:03:15 - Amber Hawley
We will do it for you. It will be happening. So anyway, tell us a little bit more about yourselves and Jacqueline, maybe you go first. All right.
00:03:23 - Jacqueline Malone
So we'll tell you about ourselves and then we'll tell you our love story. We love telling the love story. I'm Jacqueline Malone. I'm a marketing and mindset coach for entrepreneurs who want to become the go-to gal in their space. So I help them with both the marketing strategy to get known, but also the mindset and the inner work to actually put yourself out there and be known.
00:03:45 - Jessica Stansberry
Ooh, you've got that down to a science. I know, I was like, booyah. Y'all. All right. So I'm Jessica Stansbury and I am a video and content marketing strategist. And I help entrepreneurs who want to create content that converts to sales and helps them grow their business.
So that's kind of my jam. I do a lot of YouTube teaching and video content strategy and all that jazz.
00:04:08 - Amber Hawley
See, so you should never look homeless on your recording days then.
00:04:12 - Jessica Stansberry
Well, my podcast recording days are never the same day as my video recording.
00:04:16 - Amber Hawley
Ah, I see.
00:04:17 - Jessica Stansberry
Yeah. So yeah, I look homeless on podcast recording days and I look like not homeless on video days, but I mean, I still don't look great. Oh no.
00:04:29 - Amber Hawley
Oh, don't let her. I came on. I was like, Oh great. Everyone's like dressed in my wake.
00:04:37 - Maelisa Hall
Well, I was, I was going to wash my hair for everyone, but we're happy to, we are moving this week and that just didn't happen before we had our appointment to record.
00:04:46 - Amber Hawley
So I didn't wash my hair either.
00:04:47 - Maelisa Hall
Sorry.
00:04:48 - Amber Hawley
I was going to wash my hair, but I blame Facebook.
00:04:51 - Jacqueline Malone
So I did wash my hair. You look lovely. But I didn't curl the back. It's like the new mullet. It's like done in the front.
00:05:05 - Amber Hawley
That's the mom lip. That would be a mom-let, right? Because I feel like that. Nobody sees the back of my head. Why does it matter? It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. So tell us your love story, ladies.
00:05:17 - Jacqueline Malone
Yes.
00:05:18 - Amber Hawley
Go ahead, Jacqueline.
00:05:19 - Jacqueline Malone
You tell it. It was the summer of 2015.
00:05:22 - Jessica Stansberry
She's really setting this up.
00:05:25 - Maelisa Hall
It was a hot summer. Are you guys affiliated with whoever wrote this? The Sparks guy who writes the notebook.
00:05:34 - Jessica Stansberry
Nicholas Sparks.
00:05:35 - Maelisa Hall
That's like the vision I'm getting.
00:05:37 - Jessica Stansberry
We're waiting for the movie. Fun fact, I was supposed to be an extra in one of his movies. What? Yeah, but my son was very young and I was still breastfeeding and they wouldn't allow children on the set. So I had to turn it down.
00:05:53 - Amber Hawley
Oh, bummer.
00:05:55 - Jessica Stansberry
But anyway, it was a summer day.
00:05:58 - Amber Hawley
Make me want to move to North Carolina, I'm telling you. But we digress.
00:06:01 - Jacqueline Malone
He loves North Carolina. So summer of 15, I had just started my business and I'm saying this with like major air quotes because my business was literally an Instagram account. There was no like actual thing that I was selling. It was really just like starting to build community at this point.
But I had grown my Instagram account to a thousand followers in a month. And so I was like, how do I monetize my thousand followers? Because I had been listening to podcasts for like six months and had all these ideas. So in an effort to try to monetize my thousand followers, I saw that Jessica had a course that I thought would be wonderful if I was an affiliate for to monetize with my thousand followers.
And so we reached out, we were in a Facebook group. I saw her promoting it and I was just like, oh, let's chat about this.
Maybe I could be an affiliate for you. And we just said it was supposed to be like a half hour. call.
00:06:57 - Jessica Stansberry
Yeah.
00:06:58 - Jacqueline Malone
And this was like before Zoom existed. Absolutely. It was like a legit phone call. It was a phone call.
00:07:04 - Jessica Stansberry
We didn't even Skype.
00:07:05 - Jacqueline Malone
It was like an actual phone call. It was supposed to be like 20, 30 minutes and it ended up being like three hours.
00:07:11 - Jessica Stansberry
Yeah.
00:07:11 - Jacqueline Malone
It was insane. Wow. We just had like chemistry from the get-go. What can I say?
00:07:16 - Jessica Stansberry
And then later that night, I proposed and Jacqueline said yes, but with stipulations. So basically I went to her and I was like, Hey, so I've been wanting to start a podcast and I had an all up in your lady business series going on on my blog at the time.
And I was like, I'd love to start it under this name. And you know, I'm looking for a co-host. I wasn't looking for a partner, right? Like that's not how I positioned it. It I think I pitched like 60-40 where I would do everything and she would just be the co-host and like monetary wise that would...
She came back and she's like, no, I want 50-50. And I want you to remove the Olive In Your Lady business from your brand and we'll make it a brand on its own. And I was like, but she also said, and I'll take 50% of the responsibility.
And I was like, duh. Okay. Yeah. Like I basically went to her with one ring and she was like, no, I want a bigger ring. Yeah.
00:08:15 - Maelisa Hall
Wow. But she was like, I want a bigger ring. But guess what? I'll be home with you every single night. Absolutely.
00:08:23 - Jacqueline Malone
Something like that.
00:08:28 - Jessica Stansberry
Yeah. And then like right after that, like not long after that at all, Jacqueline was already making a trip to Charlotte and made a detour here so we could take some pictures for cover art. And I think her husband was like, I'm pretty sure Chris thought you were going to get murdered.
00:08:42 - Amber Hawley
He always thinks I'm going to get murdered. Yes. Always. I wish my husband would think that. He's like, you want to walk down that dark alley at midnight? It'll be fine.
00:08:53 - Maelisa Hall
My husband is like super safety and he wasn't concerned that I was going to hang out with random people in Vegas for a week.
00:09:00 - Jessica Stansberry
People I've never met. My husband is always, every time I'm, I mean, we're years into this now where I'm like, I travel for conferences. I could do, you know, every time I leave, he says, make good choices. Yeah. And I think he's legitimately worried about me, but I've had to tell him to leave me alone and not be that worried.
So that's how he defaults it. Make good choices.
00:09:26 - Amber Hawley
I love it. Although that says to me a little bit more about you getting a little wild than other people.
00:09:33 - Jessica Stansberry
Well, I won't deny that.
00:09:37 - Amber Hawley
I love it.
00:09:39 - Maelisa Hall
But I love how you both were like, You got together and that makes sense. You had this great conversation. You had this great chemistry. So you're like, well, hey, at the same time, I'm starting a podcast. This would be really great. And Amber and I know it's really awesome to have a co-host for a podcast.
00:09:53 - Jacqueline Malone
Yes. We're so lucky though, because we literally eloped immediately. I was ready.
00:10:01 - Amber Hawley
Right? We barely knew each other. We actually were thoughtful. Yeah, that was really fast to say, hey, I could have had one good conversation. I mean, how many dates have you been on that you are like, oh, this was so great. And then you see him again and you're like, Oh, right.
00:10:18 - Jacqueline Malone
Or then you, or then you meet him in real life.
00:10:21 - Jessica Stansberry
Right. And we joke around. We're like, Oh, and then we had our baby, which was our podcast. Well, Jacqueline actually really did get pregnant.
00:10:29 - Jacqueline Malone
Like at the same week. So this all happened. So we met quote unquote in July. And then we launched the podcast the first week of November. And it was literally that first week of November was fantastic. We launched the podcast. I launched my first paid program and I found out, surprise, baby number two was on the way.
00:10:48 - Jessica Stansberry
And I wasn't the dad. She's not the dad.
00:10:52 - Amber Hawley
So she wasn't home every night.
00:10:53 - Jacqueline Malone
Not every night. You're so shady, Jacqueline. I never recommend that other people go this route because it could have gone wrong in so many ways. And I just laugh even about us negotiating like percentages. Like we're basically negotiating percentages of nothing, right?
00:11:14 - Maelisa Hall
Like this thing doesn't exist yet. But we both are business minded, you know? Yeah. And I think that shows, right? Like Jacqueline comes back with that. And then based on your response, Jessica, like I feel like it could have fizzled out really quickly, but right away you're both saying like, oh, okay, this is good.
But this is going to be like something we're going to take seriously.
00:11:35 - Jacqueline Malone
And you had a lot of faith in me, Jessica, because I didn't even have a business. I had my thousand Instagram followers. It wasn't like I had a proven track record, right?
00:11:46 - Amber Hawley
Now I understand what your husband was meaning by that. Make good choices. Don't. But yes, it obviously turned out so, so well.
00:11:57 - Jessica Stansberry
It did.
00:11:58 - Amber Hawley
Better than we ever could have imagined. That is like the best whirlwind. See, compared to the other people we've interviewed, ours is like a whirlwind and we kind of went in fast with things. But man, you guys blow us out of the water. You're like the Dennis Rodman, Carmen Electra of BizBesties.
00:12:14 - Jessica Stansberry
As long as I get to be Carmen.
00:12:19 - Jacqueline Malone
I used to love Dennis Rodman.
00:12:22 - Jessica Stansberry
I did too.
00:12:22 - Jacqueline Malone
Back when he had like the leopard like spray hair.
00:12:26 - Jessica Stansberry
I loved him back then. I love it.
00:12:29 - Maelisa Hall
So I'm curious to hear how did your, like your first in-person meeting go? Cause it sounds like that was pretty quick.
00:12:36 - Jessica Stansberry
It was so quick. Not only was it quick in the relationship, but it was quick in like the present tense.
00:12:43 - Jacqueline Malone
Oh, that's what it was only two hours.
00:12:45 - Jessica Stansberry
Yeah. We only met for two hours.
00:12:47 - Jacqueline Malone
Yeah.
00:12:47 - Maelisa Hall
So you had like a timeframe, like you had to get done.
00:12:51 - Jacqueline Malone
So basically my husband and my daughter and I at the time, because I only had the one child, we're going to visit friends in Charlotte and we were driving. And so I convinced him to like detour an hour into the mountains so we could do this. But to do that, like we needed to like get back on the road.
And so we basically had like two hours to take photos and then we had to get back on the road.
00:13:11 - Jessica Stansberry
Yeah. So, I mean, it was great though. Like, I don't feel like we, at that point, like we had met in July, this was August and we had probably talked every day, like at least like multiple times a week.
00:13:22 - Jacqueline Malone
Were we on Voxer back then?
00:13:24 - Jessica Stansberry
No. How are we talking every day? I don't know. We called each other.
00:13:27 - Jacqueline Malone
This is hysterical.
00:13:31 - Amber Hawley
I kind of forget about this.
00:13:32 - Jacqueline Malone
When did Voxer start for us? I don't even remember.
00:13:36 - Jessica Stansberry
I feel like Voxer, we could like, we could troll the background of when we signed up for Voxer because we signed up just to stay in touch with each other. Totally.
00:13:44 - Jacqueline Malone
So yeah, no, it was, it was great to talk all the time, but I can't even remember what we did before Voxer.
00:13:51 - Jessica Stansberry
I remember being on my house phone with you.
00:13:54 - Jacqueline Malone
Oh, a house phone.
00:13:56 - Amber Hawley
I knew I was going to say 1985. Right, around the house phone.
00:14:01 - Jacqueline Malone
Did you have the cord wrapped around?
00:14:03 - Amber Hawley
Right. Family ties is on.
00:14:07 - Jacqueline Malone
That is how much we love each other.
00:14:08 - Jessica Stansberry
It is.
00:14:09 - Jacqueline Malone
We were having real conversations on an actual telephone.
00:14:14 - Jessica Stansberry
We didn't have cell phone signal here, like in where my house is, not in my whole area, until last year. So I had to use my house phone. Yeah.
00:14:23 - Amber Hawley
I love it. You guys sound like us. Cause we do the same thing. We like live talking. Like it just, yeah, we actually talk better. I like it. Yeah.
00:14:30 - Jessica Stansberry
Yeah. And you know, what's really fun is we've, I mean, we're what, three years into this. Yeah. And we've had one time when like Jacqueline was irritated with me and that was it. And like it lasted for like two and a half seconds. I don't know. It was at, it was at a conference.
Was it in Boise? No, it was social media marketing world. Maybe.
00:14:53 - Jacqueline Malone
I don't remember, but she got like... Jacqueline, I love how you're pretending not to remember. I don't remember. I know what it was. What was it? What did you do?
00:15:01 - Jessica Stansberry
Jacqueline's like, let's go troll the sponsors at Social Media Marketing World. Oh, I was so mad at you. I forgot about this. So the whole point and that's going into this crowd of sponsors at Social Media Marketing World or vendors was... to find another podcast sponsor.
00:15:20 - Jacqueline Malone
And then I started really sponsors. Right. So we're talking to this one and it's like looking really good. And then she starts like giving them shit about his company.
00:15:30 - Jessica Stansberry
I'm like, I don't believe that this actually works. Are you sure? Like did it. And Jacqueline's like, We are trying to like, I'm giving her like mom eyes and she's not picking up on me. And I'm like, but I would never use it. And she's like, who cares?
At least if one of us used it. And so, but it was like legit a like two minute time period.
00:15:51 - Jacqueline Malone
And then we were done. And then we found out the software. I thought it was going to be like a $50 a month type of thing or whatever. And basically, it was some type of a social media thing where you could log into one platform and you could see all of your accounts on all the platforms and like comment and respond to like all your notifications like in one place.
And it was like eight grand or something. It was very expensive. But I was thinking more of like a 50 a month or something like that. But yeah, Jessica was like tearing the business apart. And I'm like... we're supposed to be moving these people. But yeah, I got over it pretty quick.
00:16:25 - Jessica Stansberry
But like, I mean, I feel like in three years of literal daily talking and like a lot of time spent together to have like one little squabble and it wasn't even a squabble.
00:16:35 - Jacqueline Malone
Jacqueline just got mad.
00:16:37 - Jessica Stansberry
I was just like, sorry.
00:16:39 - Jacqueline Malone
You weren't mad back. It's kind of hard to be mad at someone when they're not mad back.
00:16:43 - Jessica Stansberry
No, I was just like, sorry.
00:16:44 - Jacqueline Malone
So like, that's it.
00:16:45 - Amber Hawley
I mean, it was pretty cool. That's awesome. It turned out so well. Yes. Much better than Carmen and See, it's true.
00:16:54 - Jacqueline Malone
You guys are doing it right. We are. Well, and one thing that I think is really, I don't know. lucky or whatever the word is. But I mean, literally, I didn't even have a business when we started this. And Jessica's business was a completely different business and at a very different place.
And we have both our businesses, our mindsets, ourselves as individuals and entrepreneurs have grown leaps and bounds in the last three years. And the fact that we've been able to do that together and support each other through all of that change and shift and keep...
celebrating each other and pushing each other to keep doing more, I think is really unique. And, you know, I feel very fortunate.
00:17:34 - Jessica Stansberry
We've like legit grown at the same pace too, which is kind of cool. Sometimes I wonder like if there's like a, like maybe that's why, you know? Yeah. And because you do hear of like, I mean, even in like mastermind groups or really anything where like one person might grow faster than the other or, whatever, they grow at a different rate and they feel like they outgrow each other or they increase the distance between each other.
And so it's just not as easy to talk or whatever. And yeah, that has not been the case for us, which is pretty cool.
00:18:05 - Amber Hawley
Yeah. And I do think we've talked to so many people and we've had a couple of episodes about masterminds. I agree. I think... that pace is probably one of the most important factors because like you said, there becomes this distance just inherently if someone's kind of in a different, you know, mode and the other person is in like, you know, scale mode, it's going to be different.
So that's wonderful.
00:18:27 - Jacqueline Malone
I love it. And we've had that because I like had a baby, remember? Yes. And so I was on bed rest. I had a newborn, but we've even like gone through different situations of having, you know, Jessica didn't have childcare for a while. I mean, we've kind of both like have changed our situations quite a bit.
But even if there's like maybe a couple months where it's like one speeding up and one slowing down, it just always seems to we catch up. Yeah, it's pretty cool.
00:18:51 - Amber Hawley
Yeah. Awesome. So you guys have said you talk every day. And are you voxering every day? Is that the way that you guys primarily talk?
00:19:00 - Jessica Stansberry
All the voxing. That or Zoom. I mean, sometimes we'll like hop on Zoom to talk about something. And then 99% of the time when we hop on Zoom to record episodes, we talk for 99% of the time. I don't know anything about that. I know.
00:19:17 - Jacqueline Malone
I was like, we don't do that. No, never.
00:19:19 - Jessica Stansberry
No, you're like super on top of things.
00:19:21 - Jacqueline Malone
You just, you come to record and you record, right? It's all business.
00:19:24 - Jessica Stansberry
Yes.
00:19:25 - Jacqueline Malone
But no, Voxer is our like, our drug of choice.
00:19:28 - Jessica Stansberry
We love Voxer.
00:19:30 - Amber Hawley
We just can't get into it. I don't know. Lately I've been contemplating trying it again, but yeah, we're like, oh, we tried it. We're like, this sucks. Let's just call each other.
00:19:38 - Jacqueline Malone
We can't be friends anymore. What? Well, no, we just literally, if you're not on Voxer, you can't be friends with me. No. I'm on Voxer.
00:19:47 - Amber Hawley
We both got on. Although I have been debating about using it with like my staff because I'm like, I don't want you to answer. because you're going to be, you're going to say things and I just want you to hear what I have to say.
00:19:59 - Jacqueline Malone
Yes. Well, and you can listen to them on 2X too, so it goes faster. OMG.
00:20:05 - Jessica Stansberry
There's certain people you can't listen to 2X on. I can't listen to Jacqueline at 2X because I literally can't understand her. And then I can't listen to Amy, my OBM on 2X either. Our co-BM. Our co-BM, yes. And yeah, I can't listen to her on 2X either because I'm like, I can't understand a word.
But like, I wouldn't know how the world would go round without Voxer. Jacqueline, remember when Voxer like went on the fritz for like a whole day and we were all like, oh no, how do we talk to each other?
00:20:32 - Jacqueline Malone
Listen, I have my mom on Voxer. I have my five-year-old daughter on Voxer.
00:20:37 - Jessica Stansberry
Your daughter is on my Voxer.
00:20:39 - Jacqueline Malone
What? Whoa. Don't you just feel like it's another thing to check? Well... but it's just the thing, especially with my daughter, when I travel and it goes in waves, I don't always travel, but it seems like when I do it's frequent. And so it's so nice because she can just leave me messages.
I can take photos and do videos and leave her voice messages. She doesn't, cause she can't read a text or something. And sometimes it's hard with time zones to do like a FaceTime every day. So it's worked out really well. And she has like all our relatives on there, which is super cute, but yeah, it's, I feel like a Voxer evangelist.
00:21:10 - Maelisa Hall
Yeah. You might have sold me on that one. I feel like we need to try it again, especially if I'm going to be like sailing around the world. Yeah.
00:21:16 - Amber Hawley
You know what? This is going to, yeah, it's going to be needed now that she's going to be living on a boat.
00:21:21 - Jessica Stansberry
Yeah.
00:21:22 - Amber Hawley
Unresponsive.
00:21:23 - Jessica Stansberry
The thing, like you said, isn't it another thing to check? The only notifications that are push notifications that I actually get on my phone are text messages and Voxer. Everything else, I have to consciously go check. My email, my Facebook, my Instagram.
So for instance, my team, they may tag me in something on Trello, but they know that if they need a response from me, they need to go to Voxer because that's where I'm going to see it. So I've tried... I don't know. It's just kind of become that leg in the business where it's like, oh, that's easy.
Let's do that.
00:21:58 - Amber Hawley
Yes. I think Voxer would be good for that, for team. I could really see that. But... But now I'm like, that wonderful thing about the kids. That would be so great. Cause yeah, I've done a ton of travel this year and it is hard when you're in different time zones.
Yeah.
00:22:14 - Jessica Stansberry
It is. Her daughter's on my boxer. Oh yeah. She will like random. This is like legitimately how Eleanor talks. She'll go, Jessica, you haven't sent me a boxer in a while. Yeah. You better send me one back.
00:22:32 - Jacqueline Malone
Oh, it's so, she loves Jessica. I had a call yesterday while she was home and she pops and she's like, is it Jessica? And I'm like, it's not Jessica. And the person was like, I love how much she loves Jessica.
00:22:43 - Amber Hawley
She does love me.
00:22:45 - Maelisa Hall
It's amazing. Oh, yay. Well, okay. Obviously this has turned into a boxer ad, but...
00:22:52 - Jacqueline Malone
Why doesn't Voxer sponsor our podcast?
00:22:55 - Maelisa Hall
I know.
00:22:56 - Jacqueline Malone
Is there a way to make... Now I keep getting people to do the paid Voxer too. I'm like, is there an affiliate link here?
00:23:02 - Maelisa Hall
Apparently, we're going to need one because most of the BizBestie interviews, people actually are using it. Everyone's using it. Yeah. Yeah.
00:23:10 - Jessica Stansberry
Everyone but us. Everyone but you.
00:23:13 - Maelisa Hall
So I'm curious if you guys have had any... If you ladies have had any other BizBesties in the past. Ooh.
00:23:21 - Jacqueline Malone
So I was a biz bestie virgin. Oh, but no, I've always had a lot of friends, but in the business world, like I hadn't really, I was so new when I found Jessica. Yeah. that I haven't had any other of his besties.
00:23:39 - Jessica Stansberry
Oh, are we going to talk about your exes?
00:23:41 - Jacqueline Malone
We've never talked about your exes. I don't even know. I don't even know. I'm just, I don't enjoy my eyes. What do I do?
00:23:48 - Amber Hawley
That's why it worked.
00:23:49 - Jacqueline Malone
You didn't ask for a number. Right.
00:23:52 - Jessica Stansberry
You didn't ask that number. Like I can think of like one other person that I had that was similar to Jack, Jacqueline. I was going to say Jackson. That didn't come out right. But so I had my business for five years prior to me and Jacqueline, like, getting together and all that stuff.
And so there was a time when I first started my web design business where I was just in these Facebook groups and this person kept being in there too. And we started chatting on the phone occasionally and all of that. We were both web designers. It was awesome.
And then she ended up moving and had a crazy time in life. And we just didn't talk anymore after that. I mean, we're still like Facebook friends to this day, but like we just didn't like carry on the relationship. So it got jealous of me.
I think she might have. Yeah. And it was awesome, but it was like my first, like, I think I got bad advice early on in business and it was like, Oh no, everybody's, if they're your competitor, like you need to like not talk. be friends with it. You know what I mean?
That's not. And so this was like, that girl was my first person who was a competitor, but also was a really good friend. And I was like, wow, this is like a whole new world, honestly. So I think it really opened, it broadened my thinking of like, oh, I can be friends with people who are my competitors.
And then that just opened up the door to all kinds of like, biz friends. And then Jacqueline is like, the biz bestie. I have several close biz friends, but Jacqueline is biz bestie for sure.
00:25:24 - Amber Hawley
We call them the inner circle.
00:25:26 - Jessica Stansberry
There you go.
00:25:27 - Amber Hawley
Yeah. So it's a, you have your inner circle because yes, otherwise I'd be, we're both cheating on each other, Melissa and I, because we have other biz friends too, but.
00:25:35 - Jacqueline Malone
Which is good. I like, right?
00:25:37 - Jessica Stansberry
Like, yes.
00:25:39 - Jacqueline Malone
It's so healthy to have a whole bunch of biz friends.
00:25:41 - Jessica Stansberry
It would be weird if you only talked to like one person.
00:25:44 - Jacqueline Malone
Exactly.
00:25:46 - Amber Hawley
And psychologically, I mean, this was the whole thing is, you know, as a therapist, I talk to people about having their social support network. That's a really important thing. You never want to rely on one person because one, it just puts too much pressure on them, but it also like keeps your world very narrow, right?
And so when they're not available, then what do you do? And so it's really important to have multiple people in your life. And I think it helps you grow and get other kinds of feedback. But there is something special about having that one person that you know, like, they got my back, like, I can boxer them at one in the morning and they're going to respond.
00:26:22 - Jessica Stansberry
Oh, that's not us. We're in the bed at one in the morning.
00:26:30 - Amber Hawley
Oh, look at you with your good boundaries.
00:26:31 - Jessica Stansberry
Five 30. Like that's insane to me. Like I, I would just fall over. Oh, I really didn't.
00:26:39 - Amber Hawley
I'm a dolphin. It's not normal. But yes, when you have that wind and I looked up and I was like, oh my gosh, it's 530. That really sucks.
00:26:47 - Jessica Stansberry
You're going to have to explain the dolphin analogy. Yeah, I don't get the dolphin.
00:26:51 - Amber Hawley
It's from a book we actually did a review on called The Power of When, right? Okay. Yeah. The Power of When. I always think it's like The Power of Now, but it's The Power of When. And it's a sleeper researcher and he categorizes people into four different mammals.
So there's dolphins, bears, lions, and sloths. It's not judgy.
00:27:15 - Jessica Stansberry
The dolphin never sleeps.
00:27:20 - Amber Hawley
The dolphin is the insomniac. So yeah, but I really was just working. But I think that's so great that you do need those other people. And I agree. I think that is bad advice because there's plenty of clients for everybody, right?
00:27:32 - Jessica Stansberry
Oh, totally.
00:27:32 - Amber Hawley
Yeah. When somebody understands your fields, like somebody who's technically a competitor, I think that that's so great too, because it's a different kind of brainstorming and knowledge that you guys share, like a shorthand, right?
00:27:47 - Jessica Stansberry
Oh, totally. 100%. Yeah.
00:27:49 - Maelisa Hall
We've seen that a lot with the biz besties that we have interviewed. Most of them do tend to actually be in the same field. Yeah. Because I think you have that common language and goal. And so there's just so much you can easily do. Well, I am conscious of time and I know that all four of us could chat for quite some time.
But what do you both think is... I know you already talked about both of you have seen growth in your businesses and at a similar pace, which I think is awesome. But are there any other benefits you've seen to having a biz bestie?
00:28:19 - Jessica Stansberry
Oh, like thousands of them. All the benefits. Yeah. Thousands of... But honestly, one of the really cool things... We're both... extroverts and we're both like high extroverts.
00:28:31 - Jacqueline Malone
I'm much more of an extrovert than she is.
00:28:33 - Jessica Stansberry
You're still a high extrovert.
00:28:35 - Jacqueline Malone
But I think it's an important distinction. It is a spectrum. It's a spectrum. Jessica is 100% extroverted. I am 80% extroverted. When you just say this, it sounds like we're both really extroverted. But in actuality, what it means is when we're at conferences together, by the time like 10, 30, 11 comes around, I can't people anymore.
And Jessica, who doesn't not drink is like raring to go into the night and like, come on, like trying to drag me out, which sometimes she wins, but usually I'm like, what are you doing on the bed? We have to go. There are people to see, like, I don't understand, but my extroversion runs out and hers doesn't.
00:29:13 - Jessica Stansberry
So that is the distinction. Okay. There's the distinction, but we are both extroverted, but it is really extroverted. I mean, a lot of times people think like extrovert's can just walk into a room and are super comfortable and just dominate. But it's really cool when we go to a conference together, especially in person.
We always have that other person to... pull into a situation with us, get us out of a situation, whatever that looks like. And so I think that's one of the really awesome benefits of having that business. Totally.
00:29:45 - Jacqueline Malone
Our business trips are like sleepovers because then we get to go back at the end of the night and totally talk about everything that happened and what were our takeaways and what were our ideas and insights and we can share everything. And the fact that we're both moms and we both have similar businesses and similar goals and aspirations and all of that, it is nice that we can talk about anything.
00:30:07 - Jessica Stansberry
Yeah. Literally nothing's off topic. And sometimes we record our late night chats on voice memo or Jacqueline has them and they're hysterical to go back and listen to later. Yes.
00:30:19 - Amber Hawley
I love that you want a wherewithal to do that.
00:30:23 - Jessica Stansberry
Yeah. Oh, she does. She'll just like, but it's in the middle of us like hysterically laughing. So then she's like, I'm going to record this. And it's just, it's really fun.
00:30:31 - Amber Hawley
That's a good idea. I do think we've never talked about that, but I agree that those end of the night debriefings are some of my favorite times. And it's just so, yeah, it feels so good. And I feel like we get really good ideas like that.
00:30:46 - Jessica Stansberry
Totally. Even if you're like, Sleep drunk, you know, like, you're just like, Not, I don't drink, but I get just as delirious as Jacqueline. Oh, yeah, does when she's drinking. Thank you for that, you're welcome, but I'm like, I'm not drinking. But I'm still just as hysterical because I'm so tired, because I'm not a dolphin at all.
Yeah, it makes.
00:31:12 - Maelisa Hall
Yeah, sleep drunk is for sure a thing.
00:31:14 - Amber Hawley
Yeah, yes. Yes. And I would say that probably like, yeah, none of us probably need to drink to be fun.
00:31:21 - Jessica Stansberry
But yeah, that's... Jacqueline needs to drink to do karaoke. I have a five drink minimum. Oh, wow.
00:31:28 - Amber Hawley
I was like... And both of your facial expressions.
00:31:31 - Jessica Stansberry
And not only does she have a five drink minimum, but when she's... I'm like, you need to get them done because I want a karaoke. She gets them done.
00:31:38 - Jacqueline Malone
And she is like... And I bring it and I bring it, but I can't as much, as much as I get compliments on my speaking voice, I have the worst singing voice ever. So I have to like the five drinks, like then I stopped caring before the, then I care.
00:31:53 - Jessica Stansberry
And I just can't, I can't be like dancing on couches.
00:31:58 - Maelisa Hall
I love karaoke.
00:31:59 - Jessica Stansberry
Me too. I could karaoke at two o'clock in the day in the chamber of commerce meeting.
00:32:04 - Maelisa Hall
I don't even care.
00:32:05 - Jessica Stansberry
I just like, it's fun. And I have no singing voice at all.
00:32:09 - Amber Hawley
But I just love it. I'm probably... I'm with you a little bit, Jacqueline. I'm probably a two-drink girl, but I think five. I don't know that I would be able to stand up there.
00:32:18 - Jessica Stansberry
She doesn't. She stands on the couch. I love it. I love it.
00:32:24 - Amber Hawley
I wish we hung out more at Podcast Movement now.
00:32:26 - Maelisa Hall
I know. Well, apparently, whenever the four of us are all together, we will need to karaoke. For sure. Oh, I like this idea. Yeah. Yes. It'll be good. Okay. Well, if people...
